I actually made this sauce the day my grandfather passed away, so I totally spaced taking "real" photos of the finished product. But the Instagram photo above does the pizza some justice, at least.
Anyway, this recipe makes a lot more sauce than what's needed for one pizza, but I just stuck our leftovers in the freezer for later use. (This sauce can be stored in the freezer for up to 12 months).
Homemade Pizza Sauce
Yields: About 4 cups (enough for about 4 pizzas)
Adapted from Taste of Home
-1 can (29 ounces) tomato sauce
-2 cans (6 ounces each) tomato paste
-1 teaspoon dried basil
-1 teaspoon dried thyme
-1 tablespoon dried oregano
-1/2 teaspoon fennel seed, crushed
-1 teaspoon garlic powder
-1 clove fresh garlic, minced
-Salt and black pepper, to taste
Directions:
1.) In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine tomato sauce and paste. Add remaining ingredients; mix well.
2.) Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Cool slightly before spreading on pizza crust.

Seriously...this recipe couldn't get any easier. And the difference in taste (homemade versus canned) is incredibly apparent.
Do you make your own pizza at home?
This pizza looks so incredible and delicious! I have to admit that I do not really make homemade pizza sauce at all, but this recipe looks look a great one to reference. One of my favorite ways to make pizza is to make small pizzas on tortillas or flatbread. So easy!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of making small pizzas on tortillas and flatbread!
DeleteSo sorry about your grandfather. The sauce sounds very good.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Megan!
DeleteSo sorry to hear about your grandfather's passing. I hope this amazing looking pizza offered some comfort.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emily! Cooking and eating it definitely did. :)
DeleteI love making homemade pizza! I typically use Jim Lahey's no knead pizza dough recipe - it's so easy with no mess (I don't have a KitchenAid yet to help out with the kneading process). The sauce recipe sounds great!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your grandfather. Good food always does seem to help, though :)
Oooh, I'll have to try that no-knead recipe. I do have a KitchenAid, but still somehow manage to over-knead the dough sometimes. And thank you for the condolences!
Deletesorry to hear about your grandfather, although i always like how cooking provides some therapy so I'm glad to see you made pizza!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shannon! Making (and eating) this pizza was definitely therapeutic.
DeleteLooks so yummy! This weekend I am going to try this for my kids. Thank you for the recipe, Michelle!
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure! Let me know how they like it. :)
